The Virtual Societal Challenge (VSC) initially launched in 2021/22 with the project name: Virtual Environmental Challenge (VEC).
The project was developed during the COVID-19 lockdown period as a means to continue the education and training of university level students. As a language teaching and learning module the VSC is an important part of our flagship virtual exchange programs at University Rennes 2.
Initially devised in collaboration with the DESIRE DUNE (Development of Innovative Higher Education in Rennes) initiative, the VSC answered to two other calls for projects: eMERGE (European Margins Engaging for Regional and Global Empowerment) and TRIP (Training and realising innovations in Internationalisation at home Pedagogies). In association with TRIP, Rennes 2 is leading Project Result 2 (PR2) to co-construct a flagship virtual exchange module with a focus on inclusive Internationalisation at Home (IaH) and global societal issues.
As a module, via a Challenge-based learning approach, the VSC aims at the inter-campus exploration of themes – related to the UN’s 2030 Agenda – through collective productions in an international virtual classroom format. Within this framework, Masters students support online teams of international students in a virtual challenge to overcome societal issues.
